I think the one thing I learn from this course that stood out to me is to always prepare. Whatever you plan to do in this entrepreneurial journey or working towards fulfilling your goals and dreams in this life you must do preparation and be ready to face not only failures and difficulties but also when experiencing success. Here are some examples of the kind of preparations you need to succeed or to get up and keep going when the going gets tough.

1.       Have a vision and action plan.

As President Thomas S. Monson simply puts it, “Vision without effort is daydreaming…” Up until now I thought having so many great visions and dreams mean I already am going to be great in life, to end up the best in my career and on the top of the world. It turns out that not only I have to dream but follow through with some actions. Put effort into your goals and dreams. Start now and do not put it off to wait for perfect weather because someone else may beat you to the idea and opportunity that was meant for you because you procrastinate.

2.       Imagine yourself at the finish line.

Do not just toil hard day and night without thinking about your end goal. You will face trials that will make you want to quit. It helps in your journey to envision yourself at the finish line, accomplishing your goals and dreams and winning the race! Use some imagination with yourself on the podium, this may give you courage in times of despair to keep trying and never give up.

3.       Set guardrails and Core Values.

Set moral and ethical boundaries that will help you keep your values and not sacrifice them when face with temptations. These will serve you with peace of mind and save you from a lot of troubles in the long run. Set aside regular time to review your day/week/month/year and reflect and refresh and importantly do not forget to rest, this is important to not only your personal growth but also your family. “Make sure you are running your business and not your business running your life.”

4.       Have mentors and good companions for the journey.

Seek trustworthy mentors that have your best interest at heart. They will guide you, counsel you and help you not only succeed but become great friends and partners in the long run. Have honest and loyal friends that will support you especially in time of need. Some friends leave you high and dry once they see your troubles. Make sure you know your friends and choose wisely your companions.

5.       Nothing is impossible with the Lord.

With the Lord’s help you can accomplish your goals and you can do great things. If you put your trust in the wisdom of man, man’s intelligence is limited but with God’s help anything is possible. Always remember that. Put God first by seeking his kingdom first and keeping his commandments, ask for his guidance and He will bless you.

6.       Know yourself.

Know your strengths and weaknesses. Gain as much experience as you can and become a lifelong learner. The more you learn the more you know. Work on improving your weaknesses. Working in areas not related to your dream job will expand your knowledge and skills and give you experiences that will make you more qualified and better equipped to start your own business.

This is just a personal advice, have fun during the journey and keep a good sense of humor. A humorless journey is boring and depressing.
